dc.description.abstract | Complaints were made by several English-medium students at Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, Negara Brunei Darussalam. They argued that the Arabic Language curriculum content currently taught in the university does not adequately suit their demands in honing their skills and improving their abilities of said language.
According to these students, certain texts in the book were not interesting, nor realistic or relevant to their everyday situations. As a result, the researcher is prompted to conduct a research regarding this. The three objectives of this research include: firstly, identifying the learning needs of English-medium students at Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA), Negara Brunei Darussalam, who are learning Arabic language;
secondly, confirming a proposed criteria or standards for Arabic language curriculum content which would fulfil the learning needs of these students, and finally, designing Arabic language curriculum content based on those students’ learning needs. To achieve these objectives, surveys had been distributed to three academic staff members and 232 students at UNISSA. The researcher used the quantitative descriptive method and data collected was later analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Software. Results of the study show that the main motivating factor for UNISSA English medium students learning Arabic language was
religious motivation and that the top four learning needs of these students were also religiously related. Secondly, academic staff participants agreed on all the proposed criteria or standards of the Arabic language curriculum content. Finally, it was concluded that academic staff and students achieved a high arithmetic mean score which supported the idea that the proposed curriculum content by the researcher is good and can be adopted as the curriculum content for English-medium students learning Arabic language at UNISSA. Additionally, it was suggested that students who have Arabic language background and those who do not have that background should not be combined in the same class in order to ensure that language learning
remains effective. | en_US |
