Abstract
This study aims to identify students errors in using the plural among Malay students in Arabic secondary schools in Brunei Darussalam, to identify the causes of these errors, and then make suggestions to correct these errors when using the plural. The researcher chose two schools: first, Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha Girls Arabic Religious Secondary School, where the researcher selected a sample of female students in Arabic stream with a total of 136 female students from year 8, and the second is Temburong Arabic Preparatory school, which consists of 18 male and female students from year 8 and they are in Arabic stream as well. This research is a quantitative descriptive research, where the researcher asks the students of the selected sample to write a composition, and then collect papers from them. After that, the researcher starts with analyzing the errors, especially in using plurals. A total of 154 errors were analyzed, the researcher used five stages in analyzing errors: first, identifying errors, second describing errors, third counting the repetition of errors, fourth interpreting errors, and finally correcting errors. The result of this research shows that errors in using plural, which are often experienced by students in order as follows: errors in Jama’ Taksir, errors in Jama’ Muannath Salim, errors in using Third Pronoun, and lastly errors in Jama’ Mudzakkar Salim. The reasons for these errors are because of language transfer, evolutionary reasons, as well as psychological reasons. The study concluded some suggestions for teachers and students for improving Arabic Language.
