مسا ئل علم البيان في تفسير السراج المنير للخطبيب الشربيني
Abstract
This research examines the science of interpretation (‘Ilm al-Bayan) in Tafseer al-Siraaj al-Muneer by al-Khatib asy-Syirbini and attempt to determine the role of al-Khatib asy-Syirbini in scrutinizing ‘Ilm al Bayan and discover the uniqueness of his study in the usage of terms used in ‘Ilm al-Bayan. In addition, this research attempts to know the rhetorical (Balaghah) sources on which he relied, the rhetorical value of his interpretation, and the limitations. This study aims to assess the claims of some scholars on the stagnating rhetorical research in the Ottoman era. This research employs descriptive analysis method where the researcher extract the secrets and rhetorical anecdotes in his interpretation, and classifies them in a way that is consistent with this research and is followed by quoting the opinions of scientists before and after them, and then by examining the words of
scientists and interpreters, and subsequently analyzing, discussing, and balancing them so that their impact, and uniqueness are evident. At the end of this research, the most important results are: al Khatib asy-Syirbini is a highly skilled interpreter of various sciences, especially in the sciences of Balaghah. He has a distinct personality in the study of the Quranic verses. Asy-Syirbini has gathered
in his interpretation (tafseer) all the interpretations of his predecessors of scientists, but it was not a mere gathering, instead, it had a distinct personality in the study of Quranic verses. His interpretation attests his strong knowledge in Arabic in general and Balaghah in particular. Asy-Syarbini has used archaic terms in his interpretation making his interpretation hard to be understood by a beginner reader. The finding of this research confirms the claims of the previous scholars that the rhetorical rules were stagnant in the Ottoman era, and the rhetorists did not add new rules, but added new touches in the application of these rules, especially in their interpretation of the Qoranic verses, which is a useful material for rhetorical research. Among the additions of Asy-Syarbini is the mention of Majaz Mursal's (Alaqat) relation in some verses which are not stated by previous interpreters, or different from what they have established, including the use of some rhetorical methods in interpreting some verses in a manner that has never been used by the previous interpreters, not to mention his behavior in being influenced by his predecessors and his behavior in influencing his successors.
