Abstract

This master research focuses on the “Ijtihad” in Mazhab Shafi’i and how it is being carried out at Darul ifta Brunei Darussalam. This research consists of 4 chapters, which the first chapter talks about the definition of Ijtihad in detail and the 2nd Chapter is on the “dalil” or evidence of Ijihad. The 3rd Chapter highlight on the concept of Ijtihad in the view of Imam Shafi’i. Meanwhile in the 4th Chapter, a study on how Ijtihad is practically done will be mentioned with a special reference to the Darul Ifta of Brunei Darussalam as the main institution to carry out this Ijtihad in Brunei Darussalam. Therefore, a study on the Darul Ifta from its historically development and things related to it will also be stressed later such as the role of Darul Ifta in Brunei Darussalam on giving out “fatwas” and how it deals with the religious matters especially in Brunei Darussalam.
