Abstract
Tawfĩq al-Ḥakĩm is one of the major pioneers in modern Arabic literature especially in drama writing. He is considered as the most famous playwright of Egypt. “The Community Theatre” includes a series of short dramas for publication in newspaper articles, in which later gathered and formed into a book consisting 21 short dramas focusing on social issues. The main purpose of this research is to analyse the dramas which include the writing technique, characterization, dialogue and significance of each drama. In addition, it is to identify what are the social issues Tawfĩq al-Ḥakĩm was trying to picture and overcome. This research is also aimed to measure the success of Tawfĩq al-Ḥakĩm in using Comedy as a technique to criticise social issues as many critics refused to apply this method and insisted in using only Tragedy for social critics. The research is also trying to investigate the reason why Tawfĩq al-Ḥakĩm used Tragedy in only one of the dramas named ‘Death song’. This study is of significant importance as it is not only focussing on the social issues of the Arabs but also applicable to Brunei society. Community theatre as well plays a major role in developing a certain aspects of life mainly in religious, political and social issues by reenacting the positive and negative values of a society in the plays. The researcher utilises analytical approach, with the help of artistic and critical methods. This paper consists of introduction, seven main chapters, conclusion and list of references used.
