The theme of this thesis is a semantically investigation in TAFSIR GHARĪB ALQUR’AN BY IBN QUTAYBAH. This research aims at identifying the author`s efforts and methodology he had followed in etymology of the words classified as ambiguous in the Qur’an. The present researcher has employed the descriptive analytical approach. The study has been undertaken in seven chapters. The first chapter consists of issues such as research questions, research objectives, justification of research, organization of study, Chapter two is about the biography of Ibn Qutaybah and explanation of the term ‘Gharīb’ “ the ambiguous " in the Holy Qur’an. Chapter three is a brief of the field semantics in Arabic, while the fourth chapter reviewed the most important relevant studies carried on the semantics. Those chapters were the theoretical frame of the study whereas chapters five and six concern with the practical part. Furthermore, Chapter five is a study on derivation of some Qura`nic words. Chapter six studies the elevation of some Qura`nic words of the Qur'an in Ibn Qutaybah`s book. In chapter seven the researcher summarizes the research findings and suggestions. The study revealed how Ibn Qutaybah has contributed to Qur'anic exegesis. It also reveals his method in the study of Qur`anic words entomology such as tracing the word origins before their elevations of their meanings.
