Abstract
This study aims to identify the problems and difficulties faced by the students and teachers, in Arabic secondary schools in learning and teaching Arabic literature. It also attempts to investigate the factors causing the decline in student achievement in Arabic literature. The researcher has randomly selected respondents as samples of the study, consisting of (90) students from year 9 to year 11, and (10) teachers teaching Arabic literature in Arabic secondary schools in Brunei Darussalam. This study uses descriptive, analytical method of evaluation in its approach. The researcher has distributed a set of questionnaires to respondents and conducted interviews with the teachers who teach Arabic literature, officer in the curriculum section in Islamic studies department and skilled lecturers in Arabic literature to analyze data and obtain findings. Through this study, various findings have been obtained, for example, students are unable to understand the lessons and instead just memorize what was being taught. Also, students could not understand if the teacher gives explanation entirely in Arabic. The study also shows the view among teachers that some of the topics in the syllabus are not appropriate with students age, and some topics are difficult to understand. The study concludes by providing some recommendations and suggestions to increase the students’ performance in Arabic literature and improve teaching and learning Arabic literary in Arabic schools in Brunei Darussalam. In addition, it emphasizes a need to provide a more appropriate curriculum for Arabic literature in Arabic secondary schools.
