Abstract
Realizing that the art of calligraphy is aesthetic which has the values of beauty and is capable of giving attractiveness to people, then the use of calligraphy in preaching is quite significant. Brunei Darussalam, in its context as a country of remembrance, the position of calligraphy is strong and favored among the Brunei community. The art of calligraphy is highlighted and developed through various cultural and educational angles. The initiative of the government and the private sector in highlighting the art of calligraphy can be seen on signs, gates, street names and others. Besides that, through education, there are several schools or government and private institutions that also offer learning calligraphy. This is to ensure that achievements and implementation in the field of calligraphy can be improved over time. Calligraphy artwork is produced and displayed with an interesting and thorough presentation as one of the arts with great potential in influencing thinking and lifestyle towards a more Islamic direction. Thus, this study aims to identify the perception of Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) students and to measure their level of knowledge about calligraphy as a preaching medium. This study uses the field method through the distribution of questionnaires to a total of 241 UNISSA students. The results of the study show that the level of students knowing and mastering the art of calligraphy is still at a moderate level that requires an increase in knowledge. Even so, the mean for students' perception of calligraphy as a medium of preaching that can be conveyed indirectly is high, if the calligraphy is placed in an appropriate place (mean 4.63), if it is drawn artistically (mean 4.54) and if it is presented with an interesting performance (mean 4.41). The implication of this study is that UNISSA students need to learn more about the art of calligraphy and appreciate it as a preaching medium that is capable of attracting the attention of everyone who sees it as well as stimulating thought and sparking the conscience in developing the soul and body because art is the main key towards the acceptance of preaching.
